In 1608 an Englishman named Thomas Coryate visited Italy. He liked the country and wrote down every interesting thing he found. But there was one thing which he found more interesting than the others. In his diary Thomas wrote, “When the Italians eat meat, they use small forks. They do not eat with their hands because, as they say, people do not always have clean hands. ”

Before leaving for England, Thomas Coryate bought a few forks.

At home Thomas had a dinner party to show the invention to his friends. When the steak (牛排)was brought out, he took out a fork and began to eat as they did in Italy.

Everybody looked at him in surprise. When he told his friends what the fork was, they all wanted to take a good look at the strange thing. All his friends said that the Italians were very strange people because the fork was not easy to use at all.

Thomas Coryate tried to prove (证明)that his friends were wrong. He said it was not nice to eat meat with ones fingers because they were not always clean.

Everybody got angry at that. Did Mr Coryate think that people in England always had dirty hands? And weren”t the ten fingers we had enough for us?

Thomas Coryate wanted to show that it was very easy to use the fork. But the first piece of meat he took with the fork fell to the floor. His friends began to laugh and he had to take the fork away.

People in England began to use forks only fifty years later.

Some cars do not run the way they should. Bad smoke from a car can get into the air. This bad smoke is called pollution.

Pollution turns the air a gray (灰色的)color. It is very dirty. It is not good for people to breathe this dirty air.

To keep pollution down, the States tests cars every two years. This test checks to make sure the cars do not pollute the air. If a car does not pass the test, the owner cannot drive it the next year.

Some car owners drive their cars even though they cannot pass the test. It is also very bad for the air.

People want to find a way to get these cars off the road. So a state program was started that now seems to be helping. In this program the States buys cars that cannot pass the tests or will help pay for repairs. This program has been helping people buy better cars or fix their old ones. It has also been helping to cut down on pollution.

To meet the needs for the program, a car must be drivable and the owner must meet certain income (收入)restrictions (限制). In order to get help from the program, a motorist must have a family income of no more than 185% of the national poverty guidelines (贫困线). For a family of four, that would be no more than $32, 653 each year.

The state program that takes polluting cars off the road has just finished its first year, and people say it has been successful.

For the past year, the state program has been buying cars that can”t pass the tests. Some car owners get as much as $1,000 for their old ones, while others receive as much as $500 for repairs.

The cars bought by the States through the program are put out of use and sent to dismantlers (拆卸厂).

Animals do many different, amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them “migrate. ”This means that they travel to other places where the weather is warmer or where they can find food.

Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip can be dangerous, some travel in large groups. For example, geese (鹅)fly in noisy, V-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone.

Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as weather changes. Many change their doing or their bodies. For example, Snowshoe rabbits (兔子)grow white fur (毛)to help them hide in the snow.

Food is hard to find in winter. Some animals, like mice (老鼠), collect lots of food in autumn and store it to eat later. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change. The red fox eats fruit and insects (昆虫)in spring, summer and autumn. In winter, it can not find these things, so instead it eats small animals.

Some animals hibernatefor part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animals body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy (能量). In autumn, these animals get ready for winter by eating much more food than in summer and storing it as body fat. They use this fat to keep them alive while hibernating. Some also store food like nuts to eat later in winter. Bears and some bats (蝙蝠)hibernate.

Cold-blooded (冷血的)animals like fish, frogs(青蛙)and snakes have no way to keep warm during the winter. Snakes find protection in holes, and spend the winter without moving during the whole season.

Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold, they move to the bottom (底部)of lakes and rivers. There, frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen (氧气)than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin.

Every type of insect has its own life cycle (循环), which is the way it grows and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Many insects also spend the winter without moving. Their growth and development stop. The insects heartbeat, breathing and temperature drop. Some insects spend the winter as pupae (蛹). This is a time when insects change from one form to another. Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.

How do we choose the clothes we wear? Often we choose clothes that will protect us from the weather. In cold days we wear warm clothes made of wool or animal skins. In hot days we wear light clothes made of cotton. When the weather is very hot, as it is in desert (沙漠), people wear long, wide clothes. These kinds of clothes give protection from the hot sun and let air in to help the people stay cool.

People also choose their clothes for the jobs they do. The police, bus drivers and salesmen wear uniforms (制服). Workers and miners (矿工)wear clothes that protect them while they do their work.

In the past, most people made their own clothes. Women used cloth to make clothes for themselves and their families. Later, people sometimes went to dressmakers”.

Most of the time, rich people copied the styles (样式)of kings and queens (国王和王后). When kings or queens wore a new style, people copied it. Travelers got ideas for new styles from other groups of people during their visit to some other places.

Today, high fashion designs (时装设计)from Europe, and more recently (最近地)from Japan, are sold internationally (国际化地). Fashion centers such as New York, Paris produce their own designs. People no longer copy the styles of kings and queens. Now they want to look like their favorite movie stars and singers.

Many styles today are international. People in many countries in the world wear blue jeans (牛仔服)and T-shirts. Leather jackets and kimonos (和服)migrate from one culture to another too. We want to buy new clothes. People will not buy new clothes so often if the styles do not changes so much!

The kind of clothes we wear tell people about us. We wear one kind of clothes to work. We wear a different kind of clothes to relax (放松)at home after work or to go to a party. What kind of clothes do you wear?

21. What clothes do people prefer to wear in cold weather, woolen or cotton clothes?
