We held a speech contest on the playground last Saturday morning. Twenty students selected from ten classes, two for each class, took part in it Five teachers of English worked as judges while all the students in the school viewed the contest. The topic of the speech is “to make our campus more beautiful”. In the speeches, the students insisted what we should keep our campus clean by avoiding littering, take good care of the plants so that we can enjoy the greenness and behave well and care for others so that everyone feels loved on campus. Our city started the Blue Sky Project in 1998, when it saw only 100 days of blue skies but 141 heavily polluted days. With the efforts of the government and citizens over these years, the air condition of the city has gradually improved.
The number of blue skies climbed to 229 in 2004 while the heavily polluted days were greatly reduced to 17. The progress continued each year with an increase of 5–-7 good days and decrease of 8—12 bad air days until the end of 2007, though there was an exception in 2006 with 24 days heavily polluted.
The changing numbers are due to the fact that people become more and more aware of the environment around them. In addition, the government has continued with its measures. Air quality monitoring, traffic control and tree planting are just some of the ways to improve the conditions.

Our parents and teachers often warn us to stay away from video games, but many of us just find it hard to tear themselves away from them. Last week, our class had a discussion about whether it is beneficial or harmful for high school students to play video games.
About 70% of the students are concerned about the negative effects of video games. They think that players can be addicted to them and can’t concentrate on their study. Another reason is that while sitting in front of a computer they might have little time to communicate with friends and become socially isolated. What’s worse, violent video games can lead to a player’s aggressive behaviour, which is more harmful than violent movies.
On the contrary, about 30% approve of video games. First of all, playing video games requires creativity and quick response, which are both important in our study. Besides, as a form of entertainment they can help players get relaxed and thus study more efficiently.
In my opinion, video games should not be encouraged among high school students because they are so fascinating that few students especially boys can resist the temptation. As for some students who are crazy about video games, our school should guide and instruct them to choose games suitable for them.
