Surfing: It’s Not Just for Boys Anymore
If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or volleyball. I happened to be one of the few girls who would 1 : surfing. But isn’t that a boy thing? Some people 2 . Most certainly not.
I started surfing about five years ago and 3 in love with the sport on the very first day. Riding that first 4 was the best feeling I had ever experienced.
When I try to 5 surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my 6 , there’s nothing like it. It involves body, 7 , and soul. There’s sand between my toes and cool, salt water all 8 us. The feeling I get when I’m surfing across that 9 , becoming one with the 10 , is like I’m weightless.
The one thing I can 11 from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge. You can never be the “best surfer” because the ocean 12 an uncountable variety of waves that nobody can ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are very aggressive and 13 . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it 14 from any other sport.
I’ve 15 to tell every girl I know to do something that people don’t think girls can do. It’s a part of being human to advance to new 16 , so shouldn’t it be expected that girls should step up and start 17 the limits of things boys and men used to dominate?
There’re women 18 side by side with President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys 19 the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to
20 , and they will.

My wife and I had just finished the 150-mile trip home from our daughter's college. It was the first time in our lives that she would go away for any length of 1 . We wondered how other people had 2 it.
Later in bed, I 3 the time I started college. My father had driven me, too. My mother had to stay 4 to keep the cattle from getting into the crops. I, the fourth in a line of brothers, was the first to 5 college.
The truck was slow, and I was glad. I didn’t want to get to 6 too soon. I shook hands with my father in the truck and he didn’t say a word. But I knew he was going to make a little 7 . He finally said, “I never went to college and 8 of your brothers went to college. I can’t say don’t do this or that, because everything is 9 and I don’t know what is going to 10 , but I think things will work out. When you get a job, be sure to be 11 and work hard.” I knew that soon I would be 12 in the big town and I would be 13 the life.
Then my father brought out the Bible (圣经) that he had read so 14 . I knew that he would miss it and I must 15 it. He just said, “This can help you if you will let it.”
When I finished school I took the Bible back to my father. But he said he wanted me to ___16 it.
Now, too late, I remember. It would have been so 17 to give it to my daughter when she got out of the car. But I didn’t. I could give her 18 . My father could give me only a Bible. But I don’t really believe now that I gave her 19 as much as my father gave me. So the next morning I 20 up the book and sent it to her. I wrote a note. “This can help you,” I said, “if you will let it.”

I have been hearing-impaired (听力弱) all my life. 1 the time I was five years old, putting on hearing aids in the morning was just as normal as 2 my teeth. However, I never believed that it should limit my 3 in any way.
During my 17 years, I have met many people who don’t know about hearing disabilities and 4 with this by stereotyping (对某人有成见) me. My teachers would not let me sit past the second row because they 5 I would not be able to hear. People tend to speak 6 than normal when they see my thick plastic hearing aids in my ears.
7 , my hearing disability has made me a stronger person. 8 I wear hearing aids, I have to prove that I am not physically or mentally 9 . I have to work harder and earn top grades in school to earn the 10 of my teachers. In sports I’ve had to run faster, catch better and score more points to prove I am not physically 11 .
I don’t fit in with people who are deaf and sign as a way to 12 . I consider myself no 13 from anyone else. And I am not “half deaf” with my hearing aids on; I can hear 14 as well as anyone else.
In my struggle to prove I am 15 to my non-disabled peers (同龄人), I have made myself better than the 16 teenager. I won the all-star award 17 my softball team. I have made myself a writer through my 18 poetry and articles.
Instead of 19 , I have proven that I can do anything I want. I truly believe I would not be the 20 person I am today if I did not have a hearing disability.

I was sitting in class one day, when a new kid came in. He was called Christian and he was short and wore a pair of glasses. He walked up to the teacher and told her, very 1 , that he was new. The teacher 2 to the empty desk next to me. He sat down, looked briefly at me, and then looked 3 . I didn’t think he was very nice, and certainly not the 4 I would like to become friends with.
Over the year, I 5 talked to him, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never talked to anybody 6 me.
But one day I 7 the unkind kids who were teasing him. We made fun of him 8 in my head I knew it was wrong.
“Haven’t you got any friends?” A kid asked Christian, who had walked past us 9 .
“No, he hasn’t got any friends. He’s too 10 ,” I said.
Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen. My heart 11 .
In the weeks that followed, he never met my 12 in class and never smiled at me.
It was really hard for me to 13 to write him a note asking him to 14 it. I knew I had to because I couldn’t 15 the guilt and sadness that I felt 16 I saw him.
The next day in class, I wrote him a note 17 . About five minutes later, I turned and saw tears in his eyes. Later he told that I would never realize how much my apology had 18 to him. Over the years at high school, we became 19 friends.

My favorite proverb is “Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today.” This tells procrastinators (拖拉者) to do projects before they’re due.
Procrastinators usually begin at a(n) 1 age when their parents tell them to put away their toys or brush their teeth before bed.
“I’ll do it during the TV advertisements” and “I’ll wash the dishes after I read this magazine” are 2 young procrastinator replies. I was in seventh grade when I had this moment of 3 .
As a child, my parents were always asking me about my 4 . As I grew older, they began to
5 me. Instead of asking if I had something to do every 15 minutes, they 6 to every 20 minutes. I never noticed I was a procrastinator because I didn’t 7 my homework for very long.
8 the seventh grade, this 9 caught up with me over a project on history. At first, I thought, “Well, I’ve got to do it.” It didn’t 10 long for that to quickly turn into another 11 . Later on, I was in a complete mess. “Why do today what you can do tomorrow” became my 12 . Homework that I’d hardly begun working on, were in fact 13 due.
It was on that day that I realized my 14 . I, yes, I, was a procrastinator. It 15 me like a ton of bricks. At that moment I made up my mind: never 16 would I let this happen.
I realized that 17 you have fallen this far into the hole, it’s hard to get yourself 18 . However, I tried and I 19 . And here I am, at 12:30 Thursday night, writing this passage. I’d like to 20 all young future procrastinators, don’t be like me.

I got a guitar for my birthday, and since then I have been struggling. It has awakened 1 side of myself within me. And it couldn’t have happened at a 2 time.
I’m a senior, I’m going to graduate soon and I know what 3 I’m going to. And now I have to deal with this little voice in my head constantly 4 me that I’m going to be a rock star, not a scientist.
A few weeks ago I was given the 5 simple task of writing a short story. I sat down to ___6 a beautiful work of fiction that would 7 my teacher and classmates. To be honest, this is an area I generally feel very 8 in. I really 9 it and such writing tasks used to take the least amount of time.
So I was trying to write my story, and 10 the room lay my beautiful birthday present.
“Once upon a time,” I wrote. Then I stopped, 11 in my chair, and stared for a moment at the 12 . Its dark red paint was 13 and I could see my reflection (倒影) in its perfect surface. And then my reflection started dancing and singing. I wasn’t 14 , but it sure was. I’d follow its 15 . So I seized my guitar and plucked (拨动) a string. I sat rocking with my guitar until late 16 the night. I was sure I was preparing for the 17 much more efficiently now that I wasn’t spending time writing stories.
Needless to say, no story was written, and many 18 arose in my mind. Since then, I have constantly asked, “Am I 19 for not wanting to do my work anymore?” More importantly, 20 , I’ve learned I really am going to be a rock star.
